Lots of sanding
It looks great after staining, but the prep work is a bit difficult, requiring different sanders and grit... and the turnings aren't so good as shown in the picture. The ad for this item says it is good for 4 x 4 post, but bear in mind it is octagonal and the base is substantially smaller than the 3.5 inch post top, so some finish work is needed for that. It is properly scaled for what I wanted and I am happy to see it mounted.
